THE Commission on Elections (COMELEC) announced over the weekend, January 22, 2023, that it has already recorded about 1.1 million new voters for the 2023 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE).
In a radio interview, Comelec chairman George Garcia said that nine days before the voter registration for the BSKE ends, the poll body has tallied an additional 1.1 million new voters.
Of these figure, 7,000 applicants were processed under the COMELEC’s Register Anywhere Project (RAP).
The voter registration started on December 12, 2022 and is set to end on January 31, 2023, while RAP will only be conducted until January 25. RAP is a system which allows qualified Filipino voters to register in certain establishments such as participating shopping malls.
The Comelec is set to seek a supplemental budget from Congress amounting to P3 billion primarily to increase the honoraria for teachers who will serve during the BSKE elections scheduled this October 30, 2023, the last Monday of the month.
Garcia said that the Comelec previously asked for an additional P10 billion for the BSKE but Congress only allocated P2.7 billion.
The BSKE was supposed to be held last December 5, 2022, but was moved to October 30, 2023, after Congress postponed the said electoral exercise.
