Sen. Imee R. Marcos sponsors a bill that aims to expand the term of barangay officials and members of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) for six years and allow them to serve for two consecutive terms in the same position.
During Tuesday’s plenary session, November 5, 2024, Marcos sponsored Senate Bill No. 2816 or an act setting the term of office of barangay officials and members of the SK.
“With the longer fixed term, the barangay officials and members of the SK will deepen their understanding of both national and local issues, as well as implement their own medium- and long-term initiatives at the barangay level,” Marcos explained in her sponsorship speech.
“In addition, setting the term of barangay officials and members of the SK will assure us that finally, the barangay and SK elections will never coincide with the national and local elections thus, ensuring a more focus and effective governance cycle and at the same time allowing the Comelec to have adequate time to ensure a peaceful and orderly elections,” she added (Senate Public Relations and Information Bureau).
