MAJORITY of Filipinos, including the media sector, welcomed the appointment of court administrator and spokesman, Midas Marquez, as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.

Palace spokesman and Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles, quoting Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, confirmed to the media the appointment of Marquez.

Marquez would be replacing the vacated position of Associate Justice Edgardo delos Santos, who opted for an early retirement last June 29, 2021, one year before reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70 for members of the high court.

Delos Santos was appointed by Pres. Duterte in 2019, with the retirement of Associate Justice Antonio Carpio on October 26 of that year.

The Manila Times, in its report on November 17, 2021, noted that Marquez, 55, is the “tribunal’s longest-serving court administrator” and is expected to serve the bench until 2036, when he reached the mandatory retirement age.

Rising from the ranks, Marquez served as court spokesman under the term of Chief Justice Renato Corona and again, in December 2018, concurrent with his position as court administrator.

Also well-loved by the media for his accommodating manner but without breaching the confidentiality of court proceedings, Marquez was admitted to bar in 1994.

He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics in 1987 and Juris Doctor degree in 1993, both from the Ateneo de Manila University, the Times report added further.
